Spain is one of Europe's most visited countries — and for good reason. Sun-drenched beaches, world-class cities, incredible food, and a culture that truly knows how to live. But Spain is a big, diverse country, and the best time to visit depends entirely on what you want to do and where you want to go. This guide breaks it all down month by month.
Spain's Climate at a Glance
Spain has three distinct climate zones that make timing your visit more nuanced than most European destinations.
Mediterranean Coast (Barcelona, Valencia, Costa Brava): Hot, dry summers and mild winters. July and August are peak season with temperatures regularly hitting 30–35°C.
Southern Spain (Seville, Andalusia, Costa del Sol): The hottest region in Europe. Summers are intense — Seville regularly exceeds 40°C in July. Spring and autumn are ideal.
Central Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Segovia): Continental climate with extremes. Scorching summers and cold winters. May, June, September and October are the sweet spots.
Northern Spain (San Sebastián, Bilbao, Galicia): Atlantic climate — cooler and wetter year-round. Summer (July–August) is the best time to visit.
Month by Month: When to Visit Spain
January & February — Low Season The quietest and cheapest time to visit. Cities like Barcelona and Madrid are pleasantly cool (8–14°C) with few crowds. Seville and the south can be surprisingly warm (15–18°C). Perfect for city breaks and culture. Ski season is in full swing in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada.
March & April — Spring Awakening Spring arrives early in Spain. Temperatures climb to 18–22°C in the south, 14–18°C in Madrid and Barcelona. Easter (Semana Santa) is spectacular — Seville's processions are among the most dramatic in the world, but book well ahead as hotels fill fast. Wildflowers bloom across Andalusia.
May — The Sweet Spot May is arguably the best month to visit Spain. Warm but not hot (20–26°C across most regions), low crowds compared to summer, and prices haven't peaked yet. The Feria de Abril in Seville (late April/early May) is a highlight. Beaches are uncrowded but the sea is still cool.
June — Early Summer Temperatures rise quickly. Southern Spain hits 30°C+, Barcelona and the coast warm up nicely. The first half of June is excellent — good weather, manageable crowds. By late June, peak season begins and prices jump. The Midsummer (San Juan) celebrations on 23 June are magical on the beaches.
July & August — Peak Summer The most popular time to visit — and the most expensive and crowded. Coastal resorts are packed. Inland cities like Seville and Madrid can be brutally hot (38–42°C). If you're going in peak summer, stick to the coast or head north to the Basque Country and Galicia where temperatures are a more comfortable 22–26°C. Book everything months in advance.
September — Best Month Overall September is Spain's golden month. Summer crowds thin out, prices drop, but the weather remains excellent — 26–30°C on the coast, warm evenings, and a sea temperature that's perfect for swimming (still 24–26°C). La Tomatina (Buñol) and the Festes de la Mercè (Barcelona) both fall in September.
October — Autumn Gold October is another excellent month. Temperatures cool to 20–24°C, crowds are minimal, and prices are at their lowest since spring. The wine harvest (vendimia) is in full swing in La Rioja. Inland cities are at their most pleasant. A few beach resorts start closing, but the main ones stay open.
November & December — Quiet Season November is quiet and cheap. Cities are uncrowded and cultural attractions are easy to enjoy. December brings Christmas markets and festive atmosphere to Madrid and Barcelona. The Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria) are warm year-round and make an excellent winter sun escape.
Best Time for Beaches
For beach holidays, June to September is the classic window. The sea is warmest in August and September (24–26°C on the Costa del Sol). July and August are peak season — expect crowds and high prices on the Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, and Costa del Sol.
For a quieter beach holiday, late May or early October offer warm weather, calm seas, and far fewer tourists. Prices can be 30–40% lower than peak season.
The Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote) are warm year-round — even in January temperatures reach 20–22°C. They're Spain's best winter sun destination.
Best Time for Cities (Barcelona, Madrid, Seville)
Barcelona: Best visited in May, June, September or October. July and August are very hot and extremely crowded — the city's beaches become overwhelmed. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of weather and atmosphere.
Madrid: April, May, October and November are ideal. Summer in Madrid is genuinely hot (35–40°C) and many locals leave the city in August. The city is quieter but some restaurants and shops close. Winter is cold but the city has great cultural life.
Seville: March, April and October are the best months. Seville in July is one of the hottest places in Europe — temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Semana Santa (Easter) and Feria de Abril are unmissable but require advance booking.
Major Events & Festivals
Semana Santa (Easter Week): March/April — Seville, Málaga, Valladolid. Spain's most dramatic religious processions.
Feria de Abril: Late April/early May — Seville. A week-long celebration of flamenco, horses, and sherry.
San Fermín (Running of the Bulls): 6–14 July — Pamplona. One of the world's most famous (and controversial) festivals.
La Tomatina: Last Wednesday of August — Buñol, Valencia. The world's biggest tomato fight.
La Mercè: 24 September — Barcelona. The city's biggest street festival with free concerts and human towers.
Las Fallas: March — Valencia. Enormous papier-mâché sculptures burned in spectacular bonfires.
Prices: When to Find the Best Deals
Spain's pricing follows a clear pattern:
Cheapest: November, January, February — flights and hotels can be 40–60% cheaper than peak season.
Mid-range: March, April, October — good value with excellent weather.
Most expensive: July, August, and Easter week — book 3–6 months ahead for the best rates.
Flying mid-week (Tuesday/Wednesday) and avoiding school holidays can save significant money even in peak season. Budget airlines like easyJet, Ryanair, and Vueling offer excellent value on UK–Spain routes year-round.
