Sabratha is one of the most beautiful Roman archaeological sites in the world — a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Mediterranean coast of Libya, 70km west of Tripoli. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 4th century BC and reaching its peak under the Roman Empire, Sabratha is famous for its extraordinary Theatre of Sabratha — a 3rd-century AD Roman theatre with a magnificent three-storey stage building decorated with columns, friezes, and statues, considered the most beautiful Roman theatre in Africa. The site also has the Temple of Liber Pater, the Basilica of Justinian, and extraordinary mosaics.

The Fezzan region of southwestern Libya has some of the most extraordinary Saharan landscapes in the world — the Ubari Sand Sea (with its extraordinary turquoise desert lakes), the Akakus Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the finest prehistoric rock art in the Sahara), and the ruins of the ancient Garamantian civilisation (which built an extraordinary underground irrigation system — the foggaras — to make the desert bloom). The Fezzan is one of the least-visited and most pristine desert regions in the world, with extraordinary landscapes that have barely changed since the Garamantians ruled here 2,000 years ago.
